Wolverines sweep Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team returned to the .500 mark Tuesday by sweeping a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Waynesburg. Grove City (12-12, 4-8 PAC) hammered out 18 hits in the opener on its way to an 11-4 victory. In the nightcap, Grove City jumped out to a 5-0 lead and eventually completed the sweep with a 9-3 win.

Junior DH Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) helped pace Grove City in the opener with a 4-for-4 effort that included a double and three runs batted in. All nine Grove City batters registered at least one hit and six Wolverines posted multi-hit efforts.

Sophomore left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) went 3 for 5 with two runs scored. Junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) and sophomore shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) both doubled and singled in Game One. Senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) and junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) both singled twice. Pierrot also scored three runs.

Grove City collected six straight singles in the second inning as part of a five-run outburst. The Wolverines scored in every inning.

Junior Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs in four-plus innings. Senior Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) fired three scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate save.

Moran's two-run triple in the second gave Grove City a 3-0 lead in the nightcap. Schwamberger then helped seal the win with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. Schwamberger also doubled in the win while Moran added a run-scoring triple in the fourth. Messner also cracked a double.

Freshman third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) and senior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) both went 2 for 3. Bartkowiak and Thompson both scored twice.

Freshman pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the victory after allowing two earned runs in six innings. Herringshaw did not walk a batter and permitted just seven hits. Senior Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) blanked Waynesburg in the seventh inning.

Grove City will visit Hiram Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
