W&J trims Grove City, 6-2
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 12-13 overall Friday afternoon with a 6-2 setback at Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Ross Memorial Park. Grove City is now 4-9 in the PAC.
Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) singled, reached third on an error and scored on a squeeze bunt by senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison). However, W&J (24-7, 11-2 PAC) scored single runs in the first and second innings to take the lead. The Presidents added a pair of runs in the fifth and two more runs in the seventh.
Junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) singled home Schwamberger in the eighth to cap the game's scoring. Mertz collected three of Grove City's 12 hits while junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) doubled and singled. Moran went 3 for 5.
Freshman pitcher Jeff Baluch (Perryopolis, Pa./Geibel) took the defeat for the Wolverines, allowing four runs and 10 hits in five innings. Senior Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) pitched two innings of relief while sophomore Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) fired a scoreless eighth inning.
Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson Saturday in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
