Geneva rallies past Grove City in 10 innings

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Host Geneva scored unearned runs in both the ninth and 10th innings Monday to pull out a 9-8, 10-inning victory over Grove City in non-conference baseball action.

Grove City (12-16) led 8-2 entering the bottom of the sixth before Geneva (24-18) posted a five-run rally. Grove City left the bases loaded in the seventh and also stranded runners in scoring position in both the ninth and 10th innings.

Sophomore left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) led Grove City's 12-hit effort with a triple, double, single and three runs scored. Junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) collected three singles while junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) doubled, singled and drove in a pair of runs. Thompson and senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) both doubled in Grove City's three-run sixth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) struck out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings while senior Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) recorded the final out of the sixth inning. Sophomore reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) pitched 3 1/3 innings and yielded no earned runs. However, Tindall took the loss.

Grove City will visit D'Youville College Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Buffalo, N.Y.
