Wolverines win twice on road

LEWISTON, N.Y. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 14-16 overall Tuesday afternoon by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against D'Youville College at Niagara University. Grove City earned a 12-0 win in the opener, then secured a 14-6 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, freshman Jeff Baluch (Perryopolis, Pa./Geibel) and freshman Tim Pliska (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) combined for a three-hit shutout. Baluch allowed just two hits in six innings. He fanned six. Pliska allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh inning. Pliska recorded two strikeouts.

Grove City collected 13 hits, including six extra-base hits in Game One. Junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) homered, doubled, singled and scored four runs. Sophomore shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) tripled and singled while senior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) belted a triple.

Junior right fielder Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) doubled and singled while junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) also doubled. Junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) singled twice and drove in three runs.

Grove City scored three times in the first and extended the lead to 11-0 in the fifth. The Wolverines scored in six of seven innings.

In Game Two, senior Neil Hoagland (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) made his first start since 2005 and earned the win by pitching five innings of four-hit ball. Hoagland allowed one earned run and struck out a career-high seven batters.

Mertz tripled as part of a 3-for-4 effort while sophomore left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) tripled and doubled. Thompson also scored three times. Pierrot doubled twice while junior DH Steve Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and Moran both went 2 for 4.

Freshman Aaron Cosma (Lisbon, Ohio/Lisbon) pitched a scoreless sixth in relief while Pliska retired the final two batters of the game.

Grove City will host Thiel Friday afternoon in a single Presidents' Athletic Conference game at 3 p.m.
