Saint Vincent sweeps Grove City

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team is now 5-8 overall after dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon. Saint Vincent won the opener 9-2 and then secured a 9-4 victory in the second game.

In the opener, senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) doubled and singled while junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) also doubled.

Sophomore pitcher Michael Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) allowed three earned runs in six innings but took the defeat. Herringshaw allowed six hits and struck out two. Freshman Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) pitched the final two innings.

In the nightcap, Grove City fell behind 9-0 in the fifth and could not recover. Freshman Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) belted a two-run homer in the ninth for the Wolverines. Magister also singled while sophomore shortstop Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) doubled and singled.

Junior pitcher Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) allowed five earned runs in four innings. Hillegas fanned five but took the defeat. Freshman Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) tossed three scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Oberlin. The non-conference doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
