Wolverines now 14-11

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon with visiting Fredonia State (15-17) at College Field. Grove City earned a 14-7 win in the first game but dropped a 9-8 decision in Game Two.

Grove City collected 15 hits and two six-run outbursts in the opener. Senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) went 4 for 4 with a triple and four runs batted in for Grove City while freshman right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) collected three hits, including a double. Scott Moran also scored three times.

Junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) belted a two-run homer in the fifth to cap a six-run inning while senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) each doubled and singled. Sophomore third Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) added a pair of singles.

Fredonia State closed to within 7-6 in the fifth inning but Grove City scored six runs to break the game open. Brian Moran singled in two runs while Pierrot followed later with a two-run double. Wilson's round-tripper punctuated the inning.

Grove City sent 10 men to the plate in the second inning as the Wolverines charged out to a 7-1 lead. Scott Moran doubled in two runs while senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) added a two-run single.

Freshman pitcher Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) allowed two runs in four innings and recorded his first collegiate victory. Freshman Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) fired the 2 1/3 innings to record his first save.

In the nightcap, Grove City trailed 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth but freshman DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) launched a game-tying grand slam to left. Magister went 2 for 5 with a career-high five runs batted in.

However, Fredonia State scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh against sophomore pitcher Michael Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin). Herringshaw absorbed the defeat, falling to 5-4 on the season. Freshman Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started and allowed five runs (one earned) in four innings.

Wilson homered and singled while Brian Moran doubled twice. Scott Moran and freshman catcher Adam Zimmerman (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) each cracked doubles for Grove City.

Grove City will return to Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday as the Wolverines host Westminster in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
