Westminster sweeps Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against visiting Westminster at College Field. Westminster earned a 13-7 win in Game One. In Game Two, Grove City fell behind 9-0 in the first inning before charging back.

However, Westminster's Don Womeldorff threw out senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) at the plate to end the nightcap as Westminster held on for a 14-13 victory.

Grove City (14-13, 5-5 PAC) trailed 14-7 in the seventh but pulled to within 14-10 on a two-run double from senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler). In the ninth, Mertz cracked a two-run single that closed the Titan lead to 14-13. Moran, who walked, advanced to third on the single. With one out, junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) flew out to right and Womeldorff threw out Moran at the plate, preventing the tying run from scoring.

After falling behind 9-0 in the first inning, Grove City slashed the lead to 9-7 in the third inning as freshman DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) launched a three-run homer. Magister also doubled in Game Two as part of a 3-for-4 effort. He drove in four runs and also scored three times.

The Wolverines pounded out 21 hits in the nightcap as six Grove City players had multi-hit outings. Freshman Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) went 4 for 6, as did Wilson. Wilson doubled as part of his four-hit outing.

Also for Grove City, junior left fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) tripled while going 3 for 5. Brian Moran singled twice while sophomore third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) tripled. Junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) doubled.

Freshman pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) took the defeat for Grove City after allowing eight earned runs in three innings. Sophomore Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) pitched six innings of relief and surrendered three earned runs.

In Game One, Stombaugh and freshman Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both recorded three hits each but the Wolverines could not rebound from an early 9-3 deficit. Kriger belted a two-run homer in the fifth while Brian Moran contributed a double. Thompson and Scott Moran each singled twice.

Junior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) started and allowed five runs in three innings in taking the defeat. Senior Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) followed with six innings out of the bullpen.

Grove City will host D'Youville Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
