Saints take two from Grove City

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team wrapped up the 2008 regular season by dropping both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader to host Thomas More, 21-7 and 10-5.

Thomas More (24-11, 11-1 PAC) clinched the top seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament with the victories. Grove City (15-16, 5-7 PAC) currently sits in fourth place in the PAC. The top four teams advance to the tournament. Sunday, Westminster (7-3 PAC) will host W&J (4-6 PAC) in a doubleheader at noon. Grove City will clinch the No. 4 seed with a W&J loss as Grove City owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against W&J.

Thomas More broke Game One open with a 10-run fourth inning after the Wolverines owned an early 1-0 lead. Thomas More collected 21 hits in the opener.

Freshman DH Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) collected three hits for Grove City while senior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and senior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both singled twice. Junior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) doubled.

Junior pitcher Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) absorbed the defeat after allowing seven runs (five earned) in 3 1/3 innings. Hillegas struck out five and allowed just four hits. However, Hillegas also issued four walks.

Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as senior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) belted a two-run homer. Thomas More countered later with a five-run third inning and four more runs in the fourth.

Freshman Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled for Grove City while junior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled twice.

Freshman pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) took the defeat after surrendering 10 runs in four innings. Sophomore Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) threw three shutout innings of relief while junior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) held Thomas More scoreless in the eighth.

Saturday's doubleheader started at 2 p.m. instead of noon due to inclement weather.
