Grove City drops conference opener
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon with a 9-3 setback at Westminster.
Grove City took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth by taking advantage of three Westminster errors during the inning. Senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) highlighted the inning with a run-scoring single. However, Westminster tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, then took the lead in the sixth on a solo homer by Jeff Elliott.
Westminster added an insurance run in the seventh before adding four more runs in the eighth.
Sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) singled twice for the Wolverines while junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) cracked a double.
Junior right-hander Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) started for the Wolverines and allowed four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. He yielded 11 hits and struck out two.
Gary DeBaldo tossed a complete game for Westminster to earn the win. He struck out eight and walked six in nine innings.
Grove City (2-5, 0-1 PAC) will host Westminster (4-9, 1-0 PAC) in a PAC doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
