Wolverines split with Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team is 2-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after splitting a doubleheader with visiting Waynesburg (8-10, 3-4 PAC) Friday afternoon at College Field. Grove City pulled out a 4-3 win in the opener while Waynesburg secured an 8-7 victory in the second game.

In the opener, junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) roped a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give Grove City the win.

Sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) led off the inning with a walk and senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) followed with a single. Senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, setting up Scriven's game-winner.

Grove City trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth but senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) belted a two-run homer. Waynesburg reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh but Grove City rallied for its fourth straight win.

Sophomore pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) earned the win after firing a complete game. Metcalf struck out six and did not walk a batter in seven innings. He allowed just six hits.

In the nightcap, Grove City (6-7 overall) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to forge a 7-7 tie. However, Waynesburg scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to reclaim the lead.

Sophomore pinch hitter Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) cracked a two-run single during the inning while Kriger and senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) also had run-scoring singles. Stombaugh tied the game with a bases-loaded walk.

Grove City scored single runs in the first and third innings as sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) hit sacrifice flies in each inning.

Sophomore reliever Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) absorbed the defeat for Grove City, allowing an unearned run in 2/3 of an inning. Sophomore Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and allowed four earned runs in four innings. Senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) yielded two runs in two innings of relief.

Grove City will face Waynesburg Saturday in a single 9-inning PAC game at 3 p.m. The game will be played at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W. Va.
