Wolverines sweep D'Youville

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 8-8 overall with a doubleheader sweep of visiting D'Youville (0-11) Thursday afternoon at College Field. Grove City won the opener 16-0 and then secured a 15-0 triumph in the second game.

In the opener, Grove City generated 13 first-inning runs on 13 hits. For the game, Grove City finished with 21 hits. Thirteen different players had at least one hit for the Wolverines.

Sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 3 with a double and three runs batted in. Sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 3 for 4 with a double.

Sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled and drove in three runs. Classmates Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Robert Pecchio (Aurora, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also doubled.

Senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall), sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian), sophomore center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) and senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) all recorded two hits each.

Junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the win after pitching four shutout innings. He struck out five and allowed just one hit.

Freshman Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) pitched two scoreless innings of relief while sophomore Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) threw a scoreless seventh inning.

Grove City scored in each of its six at-bats in the nightcap. Stombaugh paced Grove City offensively with three hits, including two doubles. Moran, Pecchio and senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) all doubled. Moran and Patterson both scored three runs. Grove City sealed the win with a five-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth inning.

Sophomores Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette), J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) combined for a four-hit shutout. Klimek struck out six and gave up just one hit in four innings. Seelman pitched two innings while Stombaugh fanned two in the seventh.

Grove City will host Case Western Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
