Grove City splits with Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team is 3-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after the Wolverines split a PAC doubleheader at Thiel Wednesday afternoon. Grove City (10-12) earned an 11-9, 8-inning win in the opener. In Game Two, Thiel pulled out a 2-1 win at Tomcat Park.

In the opener, sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) broke a 9-9 tie in the top of the eighth by doubling in senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis). Magister later scored on a wild pitch.

Grove City had charged out to a 9-1 lead as the Wolverines scored in each of their first four at-bats. Wilson laced a two-run double in the first inning while sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) belted a two-run homer in the second inning.

Patterson also doubled in a run in the third while junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.) roped a two-run single in the fourth inning.

Patterson and Wilson both went 3 for 4 while Scriven also doubled in the win. Sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added two hits.

Sophomore Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) earned the win out of the bullpen for Grove City. Metcalf allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. Senior Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) allowed five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. Hillegas allowed seven hits and struck out three.

In Game Two, junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fired a complete game but took the defeat for Grove City. Herringshaw allowed one earned run and six hits in six innings.

Grove City broke through in the top of the seventh as senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) doubled and later scored on a Scriven single.

Senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) added a double for the Wolverines, who had just five hits.

Grove City will visit PAC foe Thomas More this weekend for a three-game conference series. The teams will play a single game Friday at 3 p.m. before squaring off in a doubleheader Saturday.
