Comeback falls short
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped to 3-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Friday afternoon with an 8-5 setback against host Thomas More.
Grove City trailed 8-2 in the ninth inning before battling back to bring the tying run to the plate. Senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) and senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) both stroked run-scoring singles while sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added a sacrifice fly.
However, Thomas More reliever Luke Wooldridge retired Grove City DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) with two men on to earn the save.
Sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and sophomore second baseman Andrew Patterson (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) all had two hits each for the Wolverines.
Sophomore Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started for Grove City and allowed four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Senior Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) recorded the final out of the fifth while sophomore Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) pitched two scoreless innings. Sophomore Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) tossed a scoreless ninth.
Grove City (10-13 overall) will face Thomas More (21-6-1, 6-2) in a PAC doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
