Grove City splits at Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team is 11-14 overall and 4-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference after splitting a PAC doubleheader at Thomas More Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines earned a 6-4 win in the opener before dropping the second game 12-3.

In the opener, senior first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) broke a 4-4 tie by doubling home senior DH Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) with the go-ahead run. Stombaugh then scored on a single by junior third baseman Mark Scriven (Gibsonia, Pa./Dutch Fork, S.C.).

Grove City led 4-0 entering the bottom of the sixth before the Saints (22-7-1, 7-3 PAC) rallied to tie the game. The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) scored on a single from senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis).

In the third inning, Wilson singled, stole second and scored on a single from sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton). Scriven scored the Wolverines' third run in the fourth inning as sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) worked a bases-loaded walk.

Magister led off the fifth with a double and came home on a Stombaugh single.

Stombaugh went 3 for 3 while Wilson went 2 for 4. Sophomore left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled in the win.

Junior Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the win in relief for the Wolverines. He allowed one run in two innings out of the bullpen. Sophomore Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and struck out five in five innings. He yielded three runs and seven hits.

Grove City took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth in Game Two but Thomas More broke the game open with 11 runs on seven hits. Marty Kersting's grand slam capped the comeback for the Saints.

Moran and Magister both belted solo homers in the fourth to give Grove City a 2-1 lead. Thompson scored on an error in the sixth inning to push the lead to 3-1.

However, the Wolverines managed just four hits against Thomas More starter Paul Uhl.

Grove City sophomore Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) pitched into the sixth, allowing six runs in five total innings. Sophomores Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) and Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) both pitched in relief.

Grove City will visit Waynesburg Monday afternoon in a single PAC game at 3 p.m.
