W&J top Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Three Grove City players belted home runs Friday afternoon but the Wolverines fell to 4-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 24-10 setback against host Washington & Jefferson in PAC baseball action at Ross Memorial Park.

Sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) gave Grove City a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run blast. It is his team-high ninth home run of the season. Senior shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) added a three-run homer while junior DH Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) cracked a solo round-tripper in the ninth.

Sophomore right fielder Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled and drove in three runs while freshman left fielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) also doubled. Junior second baseman Zach Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) went 2 for 2.

Senior pitcher Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) started and absorbed the defeat for the Wolverines. He allowed seven runs in one-plus inning. Sophomores J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) all pitched one inning of relief each. Freshman Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) pitched 1 1/3 innings while sophomore Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) threw 2 1/3 innings. Sophomore Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) pitched 1/3 of an inning.

W&J took command of the game with a nine-run second inning. The Presidents also posted four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Grove City (11-16) will host W&J Saturday in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
