W&J nips Grove City, 2-1
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision to top-seeded Washington & Jefferson Thursday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Ross Memorial Park. Grove City (17-18) will now face Thomas More at 3 p.m. Friday in an elimination game.
Sophomore catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with his school-record 13th home run of the season. Magister also singled for the Wolverines, who had just three hits in the game.
Junior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fired a complete game for Grove City, allowing 10 hits in nine innings. He struck out five and walked one.
David Trushel tossed a complete game for W&J (30-11). W&J broke the 1-1 tie in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by catcher Mark Thomchick.
W&J will play No. 3 seed Thiel at 12 p.m. Friday. Thiel downed No. 2 Thomas More in Thursday's first game, 11-5.
