Geneva tops Grove City

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped an 11-9 decision to Geneva Wednesday night at Burkett Park in matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference members.

Geneva (8-4) rallied from a 9-6 deficit in the top of the ninth inning by scoring five runs with two outs. Jon Jurinko's bases-clearing triple put Geneva ahead to stay.

Grove City (2-6) fell behind 5-2 but took the lead with a five-run outburst in the fourth. Sophomore DH Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) cracked a three-run triple to highlight the inning while freshman right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) followed with a run-scoring single.

Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled twice as part of a 3-for-5 outing for Grove City while Sacks went 2 for 3. Sacks and junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) both drove in a pair of runs. Perkins scored twice.

Six pitchers saw action for Grove City. Freshman Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) made his first start of the season and pitched two innings. Junior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars), senior Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and junior Steve Stombaugh (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) all pitched in relief.

Stombaugh took the defeat, falling to 2-1 on the season.

The game does not count in the league standings due to it being an addition to the schedule. The teams will play their regularly-scheduled three-game conference schedule April 16-17. Geneva is a provisional member of NCAA Division III but is playing a full PAC schedule this season.

Grove City will open conference play Friday against visiting Westminster at 3 p.m.
