Grove City sweeps Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned a pair of victories over host Saint Vincent Tuesday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Bearcat Field. Grove City rallied for a 5-3, 9-inning win in the opener. The Wolverines then picked up a 7-3 victory in Game Two.

In Game One, Grove City broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning as freshman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled in junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour). Butler scored Grove City's fifth run later in the inning when sophomore second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) singled.

The Wolverines tied the game in the top of the seventh as junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) walked and scored on a two-out double by freshman right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian).

Kriger also doubled for Grove City while sophomore DH Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs. Quirk scored three times.

Butler earned his first collegiate victory by pitching two innings of relief. He struck out three and allowed just one hit. Freshman Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) fired six innings and allowed two earned runs. He fanned five and allowed just six hits.

Junior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Grove City erased a 3-1 deficit in the nightcap by posting six runs in the top of the fifth. Senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) tied the game with a two-run single while junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) roped a two-run single later in the inning.

Kriger, Moran and Sacks all collected two hits. Junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) drove in a pair of runs.

Three Grove City pitchers combined on a six-hitter. Junior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started and allowed two runs and two hits in three innings. Freshman Taylor Johnson (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) earned the win in relief after yielding one run in two innings. Freshman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) struck out three batters in two innings of work.

Tuesday's games do not count in the PAC standings as Saint Vincent (10-5) is in its final year of provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will host PAC foe Waynesburg Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a single 9-inning game.
