Grove City charges into first place

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team surged into first place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday afternoon by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader at conference foe Waynesburg. The Wolverines (8-7, 4-1 PAC) earned a 4-0 win in the opener before pulling out a 4-2 win in the nightcap. Grove City has now won five consecutive games.

In the opener, senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fired a two-hit shutout to earn his second win in as many days against the Yellow Jackets. He struck out five and walked only one in seven innings. Wednesday, Herringshaw pitched two innings of relief and got the victory in Grove City's 12-9 triumph.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) singled in junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

The Wolverines sealed the win with three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Magister belted a two-run homer to give Grove City a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, sophomore right fielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) drove in senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) with a fielder's choice.

Magister, Kriger and junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) all collected two hits in the win.

In Game Two, Grove City broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning as freshman catcher Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover) singled to right, scoring junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville). Desrosiers scored later in the inning on a Patterson single.

Patterson also had a run-scoring single in the first inning while Perkins doubled and scored in the third inning. Perkins went 2 for 3 in the game while Patterson fashioned a 3-for-4 outing.

Freshman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched the seventh to record his first collegiate save.

Grove City returns to action Wednesday, April 7 against visiting Saint Vincent at 3 p.m.
