Wolverines thump Bearcats

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned its sixth straight victory Wednesday afternoon by storming to a 22-7 home victory over Saint Vincent (11-7) at R. Jack Behringer Field. Grove City is now 9-7 overall.

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the victory and became Grove City's all-time leader with 18 wins. Herringshaw allowed four runs in six innings to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Wolverine offense pounded out a season-high 25 hits, including eight extra-base hits. Senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) belted a pair of three-run homers for Grove City while junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) clubbed a grand slam.

Junior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) cracked a three-run home run for Grove City, which had seven players score at least two runs.

Thompson's first home run came in Grove City's four-run first inning. He and Wolff each homered in the Wolverines' seven-run third inning, helping extend the Grove City lead to 13-2. Magister's grand slam in the sixth inning to highlight a seven-run outburst.

Magister also doubled while going 3 for 3 with three runs scored and seven runs batted in. Freshman second baseman Zach Butler (Massillion, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 5 for 5 with a double, four runs scored and four runs batted in. Junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) recorded a 4-for-4 afternoon, including a double.

Also for Grove City, junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled, singled and scored three runs while junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) had two singled and scored three times. Wolff finished 3 for 6 with four runs knocked in.

Junior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon), junior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) each pitched one inning in relief.

Herringshaw had been tied with Larry Sawyer (1967-70) as Grove City's all-time wins leader with 17. Herringshaw is also Grove City's all-time leader in games pitched (52) and innings (210).

Grove City will host Westminster Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
