Grove City rallies for split at Case Western

CLEVELAND -- The Grove City College baseball team moved to 10-8 overall Saturday by splitting a non-conference doubleheader against host Case Western Reserve at Nobby's Ballpark. Case captured the opener 15-8 but Grove City used a six-run seventh inning to pull out an 8-4 win in Game Two.

Grove City trailed 4-2 in the top of the seventh but junior DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) roped a game-tying two-run double that scored junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Magister then scored the go-ahead run on a single from senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy). Junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and freshman catcher Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover) each followed with run-scoring doubles in the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, winning pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) retired Case Western in order. Metcalf fired a complete game, allowing four runs and seven hits over seven innings. The junior right-hander walked just one and struck out four.

Desrosiers also had run-scoring singles in the second and sixth innings as part of a 3-for-4 effort. Magister went 2 for 4 and Thompson scored twice.

Grove City led 7-5 in Game One but Case Western (15-14) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the game open.

Junior right fielder Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) paced Grove City in the opener by going 3 for 4, including his second home run in as many games. Sophomore second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled and added two singles while junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville) tripled and singled.

Junior pitcher Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) started and allowed five runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings. Sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings. Freshmen Taylor Johnson (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside), Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) and Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) all pitched in relief. Johnson absorbed the defeat.

Grove City is 7-1 in its last eight games. The Wolverines will host Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. in a single conference game.
