Grove City falls in 12

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 11-9 overall as the Wolverines dropped an 8-7 decision in 12 innings at non-conference foe Allegheny Tuesday afternoon at the Robertson Complex.

Allegheny broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the 12th as Jeff Dassner tripled and then scored on a single by pinch hitter Matt Barclay.

Grove City trailed 6-4 entering the ninth inning but sent the game into extra innings as sophomore second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) roped a game-tying two-run single that scored junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and junior pinch runner Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville).

The Wolverines then took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 11th when junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled in sophomore center fielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). Perkins had doubled earlier in the inning.

Allegheny tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a groundout by Ben Lowmaster.

Grove City trailed 5-0 entering the fifth inning but Kriger scored on an error and Moran cracked a two-run double. Grove City cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth on Kriger's double that knocked in junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian).

Perkins finished the game 3 for 5 while Kriger and Moran both doubled twice. Durbin went 2 for 4 and freshman Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) added a double.

Freshman reliever Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) took the defeat after allowing two runs in a career-high 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five. Freshman Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started and gave up five runs in four innings. Junior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) allowed one run in three innings out of the bullpen.

The 12-inning game is Grove City's longest game since a 13-inning victory at Thomas More April 9, 2006.

Grove City will visit Geneva Friday at 3 p.m.
