Wolverines split with Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Geneva at R. Jack Behringer Field Saturday afternoon in a clash of Presidents' Athletic Conference foes. Grove City (12-10) captured the opener 5-1. However, Geneva rebounded for a 17-6 win in the second game.

In the opener, Grove City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy), junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) roped a two-run double in the inning. Kriger later scored on a single from junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville).

Junior DH Kyle Wolff (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) extended the lead to 5-0 in the third inning with a run-scoring single.

Kriger also tripled as part of a 2-for-2 outing for the Wolverines.

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) improved to 6-1 by pitching five shutout innings. He fanned five and did not walk a batter. Junior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowed one run. Freshman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Geneva (10-17) jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first inning to take control of Game Two.

Junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) paced Grove City by going 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled and singled while sophomore right fielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) tripled and singled.

Thompson also doubled for Grove City while Quirk and Kriger both singled twice.

Junior pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started and took the defeat for Grove City. Sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), junior Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian), junior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars), junior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and junior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) all pitched in relief.

Grove City is now 4-1 at home this season. The Wolverines will visit Geneva Monday at 4 p.m. in a single nine-inning game.
