Wolverines sweep Thiel

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 7-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tuesday afternoon by taking both ends of a PAC doubleheader with visiting Thiel (11-19, 4-13 PAC) at R. Jack Behringer Field. Grove City earned an 8-1 win in the opener, then captured the second game 10-4.

Grove City (14-11) trailed 1-0 in the opener but tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff homer by junior third baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian). The Wolverines then took the lead for good with three more runs in the inning.

Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled and then scored on a single from junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour). Kriger later scored on a single by junior center fielder Dan Quirk (Schuylerville, N.Y./Schuylerville). Quirk scored the fourth run of the inning when sophomore right fielder Dan Perkins (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) lofted a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Magister doubled and came home on a single by senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy). Grove City then added three more runs in the sixth as two Thiel errors fueled the outburst.

Quirk finished 3 for 3 with a pair of stolen bases while freshman second baseman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled. Patterson and Perkins both knocked in two runs.

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the win after allowing one run in six innings. He scattered 10 hits and struck out two. He is now 7-1 on the season and has won seven straight decisions. Butler pitched a scoreless seventh.

Grove City broke open the second game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Perkins ignited the inning with a single while Thompson highlighted the inning by cracking a two-run double. Freshman catcher Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover) added a two-run single to cap the outburst.

The Wolverines grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning as Magister homered and Perkins drove in two with a single. Thiel tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth on Luke Johnson's two-run double.

Kriger and Perkins both went 2 for 3 for the Wolverines, who left just three men on base in Game Two.

Junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) earned his third win of the season after allowing three runs in six innings. He is now 3-3. Junior Steve Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) pitched the seventh.

Grove City sits in second place in the conference with its 7-1 league mark. Washington & Jefferson is 10-1. Thomas More is third at 6-2. Grove City will host Thomas More Friday for a single PAC game at 3 p.m. at R. Jack Behringer Field.
