Wolverines complete sweep of Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team completed a season sweep of longtime Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Thiel Wednesday afternoon, 6-3, in conference action at Tomcat Park. Five players posted multi-hit outings for the Wolverines, who are now 8-4 in the PAC and 15-14 overall.

Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and freshman second baseman Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) both doubled and singled in the win. Junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), junior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and freshman right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) all had two hits each.

Senior pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the victory and is now 8-2 on the season. Herringshaw allowed three runs in eight innings. He struck out two, walked one and scattered 10 hits. Junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) pitched the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.

Grove City trailed 2-1 entering the top of the fourth but took the lead for good with a three-run rally. Moran and Magister opened the inning with consecutive singles. Moran scored on a wild pitch and Magister then scored the go-ahead run on a Kriger single. Butler doubled in Kriger to give Grove City a 4-2 lead.

The Wolverines closed the scoring in the top of the sixth. Moran reached on an error and came home on Magister's double. Senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) then laced a single that scored Magister.

Grove City out-hit Thiel 14-11. The Wolverines are 11-2 when producing more hits than the opposition in a game.

Grove City will host PAC-leading Washington & Jefferson (11-1 PAC) Friday at 3 p.m. in a single game at R. Jack Behringer Field.
