Wolverines open in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the 2010 season last week in Winter Haven, Fla. with four games against regional powerhouses.

Grove City opened the trip February 25 by dropping a doubleheader with Augustana (Ill.), 6-5 and 7-2. The next day, NCAA College World Series participant Farmingdale State (N.Y.) handed Grove City a 12-1 setback.

The Wolverines concluded the trip with a rain-shortened 10-3 setback against Widener in the opener of a doubleheader. Rain postponed the second half of the doubleheader.

In the opener against Augustana, Grove City led 5-4 entering the top of the seventh but the Vikings rallied for a pair of runs. Junior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) tripled and singled for Grove City while junior shortstop Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) doubled and singled. Senior first baseman Tyler Thompson (Lee, Maine/Lee Academy) drove in a pair of runs.

Senior starting pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) fired a complete game for the Wolverines, allowing three earned runs over seven innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Freshman Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled and singled in Game Two against Augustana while junior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled.

Junior pitcher Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) started and allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings for Grove City. Freshmen Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) and Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) both pitched in relief. Butler pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Farmingdale State scored 10 runs over the final four innings en route to the win February 26. Junior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started and allowed one uneared run in two innings. Sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) tossed one scoreless inning of relief while junior Matt Smith (Albany, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) yielded one run and struck out three in two innings out of the bullpen.

Sacks went 3 for 3 with a triple and two stolen bases against Widener while Patterson collected two hits. Freshman catcher Andrew Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) doubled in his first collegiate start.

Junior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and took the setback for Grove City. He yielded four runs in 1 1/3 innings. Smith threw 2 2/3 innings of relief while Krull threw a scoreless fifth.

Sacks hit .667 (6 for 9) during the week with five steals while Patterson hit .385 (5 for 13).

Grove City will visit Otterbein Saturday, March 13 for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
