La Roche tops Grove City

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College baseball team pounded out a season-high 19 hits Friday afternoon at La Roche but the host Redhawks (9-3) pulled out an 11-7 win over Grove City in non-conference action.

Five Grove City players posted multi-hit efforts Friday. Senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) went 5 for 6 with a double while senior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 3 for 4 with a double and four runs batted in.

Sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) collected three hits, including a double, and senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Albany, N.Y./Schuylerville) went 3 for 5. Sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) added two hits.

Magister roped a two-run single in the second inning, helping Grove City jump out to a 5-0 lead. La Roche took the lead for good with a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth, however.

La Roche would extend its lead to 11-5 before Grove City scored twice in the eighth. Sacks singled, Moran doubled and both then scored on a Magister double. The Wolverines could get no closer, however.

Grove City left 14 runners on base in the game.

Senior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) allowed eight runs in four innings for Grove City, taking the defeat. Senior Andy Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) allowed one run in two innings of relief. Sophomore Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) allowed two runs in two relief innings.

Grove City (2-6) will face Pitt-Greensburg Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio. The twinbill will start at 1 p.m.
