Wolverines take two from UPG

STRUTHERS, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team swept both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with Pitt-Greensburg Saturday afternoon at Bob Cene Park. The Wolverines (4-6) earned a 6-4 win in the opener and then blanked the Bobcats in Game Two, 5-0.

In the nightcap, sophomore Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), sophomore Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and senior Steve Stombaugh (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) combined for a five-hit shutout. Butler allowed just two hits in five innings while Vickerman and Stombaugh each threw one scoreless inning of relief. Vickerman struck out two and yielded just one hit in the sixth.

Grove City jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Pa./Chapelgate Christian) opened with singles and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) drove in Sacks with a sacrifice fly and Moran came home on a single by senior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

An error led to two more runs later in the inning. Grove City closed the scoring in the fifth when Magister doubled in Sacks.

Moran finished the game 2 for 2 and senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) added a double.

Grove City broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the fifth of the opener when freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) scored on an error. Moran scored an insurance run in the sixth when sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) walked with the bases loaded.

Moran went 2 for 4 in Game One while Patterson added two hits. Kriger doubled and Sacks scored twice.

Senior pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) earned the win after allowing four runs in five innings. Sophomore Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and senior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) combined to work the sixth and senior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) nailed down his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh.

Grove City last recorded a shutout April 1, 2010 at Waynesburg when the Wolverines opened a doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 victory.

The Wolverines will host Case Western Reserve Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. It is Grove City's 2011 home opener at R. Jack Behringer Field.
