Wolverines sweep Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon by earning a pair of one-run wins at Saint Vincent. Grove City (7-7, 2-0 PAC) pulled out a 2-1 win in 10 innings in Game One. The Wolverines then secured a 3-2 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

In Game Two, senior catcher Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. Magister now has 24 career home runs, the most in program history. He had been tied with Nate Kauffman, who hit 23 homers from 1998 to 2001.

Saint Vincent (8-10, 0-2) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but senior reliever Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) worked out of the jam to earn his first collegiate save.

Saint Vincent led 2-0 entering the fourth but Grove City tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) doubled in senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) in the fourth to cut the Bearcats' lead in half. Grove City then tied the game in the fifth when sophomore center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) drove in freshman pinch runner Randen Schleiden (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) with a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore reliever Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned the win in Game Two by pitching two hitless innings. Sophomore Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) started and allowed two runs in four innings.

Magister doubled to lead off the top of the 10th inning in Game One, helping Grove City pull out the win. Freshman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) ran for Magister and eventually scored the go-ahead run on a single by freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora).

In the bottom of the 10th, sophomore pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) retired the Bearcats in order. Locker pitched two innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed just one hit. Senior Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started and yielded one run and four hits in six innings. Senior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) threw two innings of scoreless relief.

Grove City trailed 1-0 entering the seventh but Sacks doubled in Schleiden to tie the game. Sacks went 4 for 5 with two steals in the opener. Hawley and Patterson both went 2 for 5.

Grove City will visit Bethany Friday in a single conference game at 3 p.m.
