Grove City stops Thomas More

STRUTHERS, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by earning a 4-1 win over No. 19 Thomas More (13-3, 4-2 PAC) Sunday afternoon at Bob Cene Park.

Senior pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) allowed no earned runs and just four hits in eight innings to earn the win. Sophomore Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) struck out two in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

Grove City (8-8 overall) trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth but took advantage of two Thomas More errors to score four runs. Senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) opened the inning with a single and sophomore center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) reached on an error after sacrificing.

Kriger scored the tying run on a throwing error after senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) reached first safely on a bunt single.

A bunt single by freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) loaded the bases and with one out, sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) singled in Sacks. Moran then came home on a base hit by sophomore catcher Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's).

Grove City closed the scoring when junior second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) drove in Hawley with a sacrifice fly.

Senior DH Marcus Magister (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) went 2 for 4 for the Wolverines, who finished the game with eight hits.

Thomas More entered Sunday's game hitting .368 as a team while scoring nearly 11 runs per game. The teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader in Grove City April 21 at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City will host Bethany Monday at 1 p.m. in a conference doubleheader.
