Wolverines earn 4th conference win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 4-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday afternoon by capturing a 9-7 win over visiting Saint Vincent in conference action at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City (9-8 overall) led 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh and broke the game open with a five-run outburst. Sophomore first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) singled and junior second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) followed with a one-out, run-scoring double that pushed the lead to 5-2.

Senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Albany, N.Y./Schuylerville) singled and sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) doubled in Quirk. Senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and freshman third baseman Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) also had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Durbin finished the game 4 for 5 with two runs scored while Sacks ripped three doubles in five at-bats. Shock also tripled.

Senior pitcher Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) earned the win after pitching into the seventh inning. Silk allowed one earned run in six-plus innings. Senior J.T. Seelman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) allowed one run in two innings of relief. Sophomores Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) combined for the ninth inning, with Vickerman earning his first collegiate save.

Vickerman is the fourth different Grove City pitcher to earn a save this year. Butler and Seelman both have two saves. Senior Chip Hasek (Valencia, Pa./Mars) has one save. 

The win gives Grove City a season sweep of Saint Vincent (8-11, 0-4 PAC). Grove City swept a doubleheader at Saint Vincent March 29, winning 2-1 and 3-2.

Grove City visits conference rival Thiel Friday at 3 p.m. in a single, nine-inning game. The Wolverines will host Thiel Saturday at 1 p.m.
