Wolverines top Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 12-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Thursday afternoon by earning a 6-5 win over visiting Waynesburg at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Senior pitcher Cory Metcalf (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) started and improved to 7-0 on the season by allowing two runs (one earned) in eight innings. Metcalf struck out six and yielded just six hits. Senior Kyle Silk (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) worked out of a jam in the top of the ninth to record his first save of the season.

Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior second baseman Andrew Patterson (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and freshman first baseman Ryan Parker (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) both had run-scoring singles. The Wolverines added a run in the bottom of the second when senior center fielder Dan Quirk (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Schuylerville) doubled and later scored on a single from sophomore right fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian).

Quirk scored Grove City's fourth run of the game in the sixth when he came home on a successful squeeze bunt by senior shortstop Scott Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian).

Grove City (17-13) added two more runs in the seventh when Sacks and senior left fielder Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) both had RBI singles. Sacks went 4 for 5 with two steals while Patterson went 2 for 4. Quirk finished 2 for 3.

Grove City will host Geneva Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. at R. Jack Behringer Field.
