La Roche tops Grove City, 3-1

PITTSBURGH -- Junior pitcher Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) yielded just two earned runs and seven hits over eight innings Thursday afternoon but the Grove City College baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to host La Roche in non-conference action.

Vickerman recorded his first collegiate complete game and allowed just six singles and a double in a career-high eight innings but took the setback.

La Roche took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Grove City cut the lead in half by scoring in the top of the second inning. Junior catcher Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Evan Hoskinson (Uniontown, Ohio/Green).

Wells and junior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) both singled for the Wolverines (2-6). Four La Roche pitchers limited Grove City to just two hits.

Thursday's game took just 1 hour, 55 minutes.

Grove City will visit Pitt-Greensburg Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
