Offensive explosion paces Grove City
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- Seven Grove City players had at least two hits to help lift the Wolverines to a 16-11 victory at Thomas More in Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon.
Grove City stormed out to an 8-0 lead in the second inning and held off a late Thomas More rally to earn the victory.
Sophomore shortstop Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) homered, doubled, singled and drove in three runs for Grove City while junior left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) went 3 for 5.
Senior second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled twice and junior right Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) tripled, singled and scored three runs. Sophomore DH Ryan Parker (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston), sophomore center fielder Randen Schleiden (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) and freshman third baseman Mason McFeaters (Harrisville, Pa./Franklin) all singled twice.
Junior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) launched a two-run homer and freshman catcher Pete Garthwaite (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) doubled. All nine starters each had at least one hit and one run scored.
Garthwaite squeezed home Durbin in the second to give Grove City a 1-0 lead. Hawley roped a two-run double and Jones had a two-run single later in the inning to help the Wolverines open up an 8-0 lead.
In the third, Struharik singled in Schleiden. Shock followed with his first homer of the season, pushing the lead to 11-1. Hawley's solo homer in the fifth put Grove City (4-14, 2-4 PAC) up 12-2.
Freshman pitcher Will Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) earned the win after pitching into the sixth. He yielded six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Freshman Tom Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief. Senior Andrew Krull (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) pitched the ninth.
Grove City finished with 18 hits. Thomas More had 19 hits. The game featured 14 extra-base hits.
The Wolverines will play a doubleheader at Thomas More Saturday. Game One starts at noon.
