Grove City falls on road

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Geneva Friday afternoon in the first game of a three-game weekend series.

Grove City trailed 6-3 entering the top of the seventh but the Wolverines quickly forged a tie. Junior left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) roped a two-run single that scored freshman third baseman Mason McFeaters (Harrisville, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore DH Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora).

A groundout by sophomore catcher Evan Hoskinson (Uniontown, Ohio/Green) drove in junior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) to tie the game.

However, Geneva (13-15, 7-9 PAC) scored twice in the seventh and then added three insurance runs in the eighth to secure the win.

Grove City grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Hawley tripled in McFeaters and Shock followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Hawley. Geneva rebounded to take a 5-2 lead entering the fourth but Shock belted a solo homer, his second of the season.

Hawley went 2 for 4 with two runs scored while senior second baseman Brandon Durbin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) also went 2 for 4. McFeaters and Shock scored twice.

Freshman Will Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) started and allowed four earned runs in four innings. Freshman Tom Chaney (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) pitched two innings of relief and allowed two runs (one earned). Tom Chaney took the setback.

Junior Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and Hawley each pitched one inning of relief.

Grove City (4-18, 2-8) will host Geneva Saturday at 11 a.m. in a conference doubleheader at R. Jack Behringer Field.
