Thiel tops Grove City

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 17-5 decision at Thiel Saturday afternoon in the first half of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Tomcat Park. Inclement weather postponed Game Two until Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Thiel (14-18, 7-9 PAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and eventually pushed its lead to 14-2.

Grove City broke through in the top of the third when junior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) and sophomore left fielder Randen Schleiden (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) hit consecutive sacrifice flies. Sacks drove in sophomore second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Schleiden knocked in junior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro).

Grove City added three runs in the sixth. Freshman third baseman J.R. Willard (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) singled in sophomore shortstop Tom Hawley (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) and junior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) scored on a wild pitch. Rende closed the scoring when his groundout drove in Willard. Willard went 2 for 3.

Junior pitcher Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) started and took the defeat for Grove City. He pitched 3 1/3 innings. Freshman C.J. Fitzgerald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian) pitched two-thirds of an inning while freshman Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) pitched two innings of relief.

Grove City (5-23, 3-13 PAC) visits Thiel Tuesday at 4 p.m. to complete the doubleheader.
