W&J tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened its home schedule Friday afternoon with a 15-4 setback against Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Washington & Jefferson at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City led 3-0 entering the fifth inning but W&J (11-5, 8-1 PAC) took the lead with a four-run rally. The Presidents then took control of the game by scoring six times in the top of the sixth.

Grove City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when freshman shortstop J.R. Mountain (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) and junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) cracked back-to-back doubles. Rende later scored on an error, boosting the lead to 2-0.

In the fourth, senior catcher Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) belted a solo homer to give the Wolverines (1-7, 0-2 PAC) a 3-0 lead.

Rende finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored while Mountain and senior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) both finished 2 for 5.

Senior pitcher Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) started and pitched five innings. He allowed four earned runs and struck out three. Vickerman took the defeat. Freshmen Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern), Drew Chorey (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) and Kenny McCracken (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Christian) all pitched in relief, as did sophomore Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush).

Grove City will visit W&J Saturday for a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
