Thomas More edges Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened a weekend series with visiting Thomas More Friday afternoon with a 6-3 home setback in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Grove City fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third inning but slashed the lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning when junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) roped a two-run double. Rende's double drove in freshman shortstop J.R. Mountain (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) and senior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian).

Thomas More extended its lead to 4-2 in the sixth but Grove City again answered as senior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) doubled in senior left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman).

However, Thomas More closed the scoring in the seventh on Travis Miller's two-run homer.

Jones doubled twice for the Wolverines and Struharik finished 3 for 4.

Junior pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started and allowed two earned runs in five innings. He struck out four but took the setback. Senior Max Vickerman (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each pitched two innings. Gallagher held Thomas More scoreless in the eighth and ninth.

Grove City will host Thomas More (16-6, 8-3 PAC) Saturday at noon in a conference doubleheader.
