Wolverines split with Bethany

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Bethany Saturday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field. Grove City earned a 5-0 win in the opener but Bethany pulled out a 10-4 triumph in Game Two.

Junior pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) allowed just three singles in the opener to record his first collegiate shutout. He struck out nine in seven innings while walking just two.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when senior right fielder Cameron Jones (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) and senior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) both walked with the bases loaded.

The Wolverines broke open the game in the sixth as a two-run single from senior left fielder Zach Struharik (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) highlighted Grove City's three-run inning. Struharik had both of Grove City's hits in the game. Senior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale) scored twice.

In Game Two, Grove City charged out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring single from junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and a two-run single by freshman DH Kenny McCracken (Wheaton, Ill./Aurora Christian).

Bethany (7-18, 5-13 PAC) reclaimed the lead with four runs in the second and five unearned runs in the fifth. Shock closed the scoring with a leadoff homer in the sixth inning. He also doubled and scored two runs.

Struharik and senior catcher Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) also doubled.

Sophomore pitcher Mason Stephens (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) started and allowed four earned runs in four innings. He took the defeat. Senior Zach Butler (Massillon, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched the fifth while freshmen Scott Williams (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) and Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) both authored a scoreless inning of relief.

Grove City (4-14, 3-9) will conclude its three-game series with the Bison Monday at Bethany at 4 p.m.
