Wolverines fall at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision at Waynesburg Friday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Madison Park.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the third when senior center fielder Josh Sacks (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian) walked, advanced on an error and then scored on a single by senior first baseman Kyle Shock (Loudonville, Ohio/Hillsdale).

Waynesburg (19-17, 10-12 PAC) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third but Grove City answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Shock and junior second baseman John Rende (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) both walked to help ignite the inning. Senior DH Doug Wells (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) then roped a game-tying two-run double that drove in Shock and Rende.

However, Waynesburg scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and added four runs in the sixth to take control of the game.

Senior catcher Garrett Herald (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) led Grove City by going 3 for 5 while Rende went 2 for 3. Each team had nine hits in the game.

Junior pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started for the Wolverines and allowed five earned runs in five innings. He took the defeat. Sophomore Mason Stephens (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) pitched three innings of relief and surrendered one earned run.

Grove City (5-21, 4-16) will host Waynesburg Saturday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at R. Jack Behringer Field.
