Wolverines blanked by Bethany
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team managed just four hits in a 15-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference loss to Bethany College in their home opener at R. Jack Behringer Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine Richland) led the Wolverines (5-14, 3-7 PAC) with two hits in the nine-inning affair while junior left fielder Josh Hodges (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) and freshman center fielder Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) each added a hit.
Bethany scored 14 of their 15 runs with two outs, including all seven in the top of the third inning to break the game open.
Senior Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) started and took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three over two and two-thirds innings. Freshman Anthony Marnejon allowed two runs on four hits and added a pair of strikeouts in one and one-third innings.
Junior Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) threw two scoreless and hitless innings in relief while junior Kenny Saltsman (Salem, Ohio/Salem) pitched a perfect seventh inning in his Grove City debut. Junior Pete Garthwaite (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) threw the eighth inning while freshman Johnny Ross (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made his first collegiate appearance in the ninth.
Grove City will host Thiel tomorrow at 4 p.m. for a single nine-inning PAC game.
