Wolverines split at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with host Waynesburg at Madison Park Saturday afternoon. Grove City dropped a 3-0 decision in the opener but the Wolverines rebounded for a 3-0 victory in Game Two.

In the nightcap, senior pitcher Erick Locker (Canton, Ohio/Lake Center Christian) fired a five-hit shutout for Grove City. Locker (4-2) yielded just five singles and struck out two over seven innings while recording his third complete game of the season.

Grove City scored all three of its runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) led off with a single and senior second baseman John Rende (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic) followed with a single.

Laylock scored on a single by freshman first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), putting Grove City (8-21, 6-14 PAC) up 1-0. Rende and Waugaman then came home on a two-run single by senior third baseman Matt Corner (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock).

Laylock finished the game 2 for 4. Defensively, Grove City turned three double plays.

In the opener, Laylock went 2 for 3 but Grove City had just four total hits. Sophomore pitcher Mason Stephens (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) struck out six men and allowed just one earned run in five innings. Freshman reliever Ryan Braundmeier (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) yielded one run in the sixth.

The teams will conclude their weekend series Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at R. Jack Behringer Field.
