Grove City drops two to Behrend

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell twice to visiting Penn State Behrend on a rainy Saturday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field, losing game one, 4-2, before dropping the nightcap, 5-1.

The Wolverines (9-25) were held in check by the Lions' pitching, managing just six total hits between the two games.

Penn State Behrend (27-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second of game one on an unearned run and extended that lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, but Grove City would get an RBI-groundout from freshman shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) and an RBI-sacrifice fly from senior second baseman John Rende (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic) in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2 through three.

The Lions would string together three consecutive singles in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 4-2 but freshman right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) once again prevented an additional run by throwing out a second Behrend runner at home.

That would be all of the scoring, as the two teams combined for just three hits over the second half of the game.

Junior pitcher Mason Stephens (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) took the loss on the mound for the Wolverines in game one, allowing seven hits and four runs (three earned) over five innings while striking out a season-high eight batters. Freshman Andrew Taylor (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) allowed just two hits in two scoreless innings of relief.

The Lions once again struck first in game two, taking advantage of a pair of Wolverine miscues to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Wolverines were quick to answer, as Laylock led off the Grove City third with a walk and, after stealing second, advanced to third on a Rende sacrifice bunt. That put Laylock in position to score when sophomore designated hitter Travis Royer (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) hit an RBI-single past the Behrend third baseman into left field, evening the score at 1-1.

The score would remain tied into the fifth inning, when Behrend once again put together three consecutive hits to score a pair of runs and take a 3-1 lead. The Lions would add single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to make it a 5-1 score while Grove City managed just one hit for the remainder of the game- an infield single by senior third baseman Matt Corner (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman Ben Finlan (State College, Pa./State College) scattered five hits and four runs (two earned) over six innings to take the game two loss. Junior Kenny Saltsman (Salem, Ohio/Salem) allowed two hits and one run in one-third innings of action while freshman Johnny Ross (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) notched a strikeout while recording the final two outs.

The Wolverines will conclude their 2014 season on Monday when they play host to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
