Grove City falls to Thomas More in series finale

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team couldn't get the bats going as the Wolverines fell to Thomas More 10-1 in their Presidents' Athletic Conference series finale on a sunny Sunday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Thomas More (19-4, 11-1 PAC), who is ranked 28th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Division III poll, scored four runs in the top of the third to take control of the game early. Grove City would get on the board in the bottom of the third when sophomore third baseman Brandon Gresh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) singled and later scored on an RBI-infield single from freshman shortstop Drew Landis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), making it a 4-1 game.

That would be all the scoring for the Wolverines, however, while the Saints added a single run in the fifth inning, three in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Sophomore catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) stayed hot at the plate, going 2-4 to lead Grove City offensively while sophomore left fielder Luke Vorce (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), sophomore right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), Gresh and Landis each added single hits.

Sophomore Ben Finlan (State College, Pa./State College) took the loss on the mound for the Wolverines, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) over four and two-thirds innings. Junior reliever Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) pitched one and one-third scoreless innings while senior Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) and sophomore Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) pitched the seventh inning and sophomore C.J. Hils (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) threw the eighth and ninth.

Grove City hosts Waynesburg tomorrow in a single nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference game. Start time for tomorrow's game has been moved up from 4 p.m. to 12 p.m. due to expected rain in the evening.
