Wolverines downed by Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team struggled to take care of the ball and Waynesburg capitalized on the miscues as the Jackets defeated the Wolverines 20-4 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference nine-inning game on a sunny Monday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field.

Sophomore first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the Wolverines (9-14, 5-8 PAC) offensively by going 2 for 3 with a home run while freshman shortstop Drew Landis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) was 2 for 4 with a triple and sophomore right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) also added a pair of hits.

Waynesburg (11-12-1, 9-3) used six hits, a pair of walks and three Grove City fielding errors in the top of the first inning to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead. The Wolverines got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first when freshman Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) earned a leadoff walk and later came home to score on a Landis triple to the center field fence.

After a scoreless second inning, Grove City continued to chip away at Waynesburg's lead in the bottom of the third. Graham once again led off the inning for the Wolverines with a double and, following a pair of strikeouts, Waugaman brought him home with a two-run shot over the right field fence to make it a 7-3 game.. The home run was Waugaman's team-leading fourth of the season.

That would be as close as the Wolverines would get, however, as the Jackets' Jonathan Kletzli led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run and Waynesburg added five runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Anthony Marnejon (Columbiana, Ohio/Crestview) took the loss for Grove City while throwing four innings of action. Junior Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler), sophomore C.J. Hils (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), sophomore Johnny Ross (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), and junior Rob McLain (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Co. Christian) all saw action in relief.

Grove City hosts Washington and Jefferson tomorrow at 2 p.m. in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
