W&J takes two from Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against visiting Washington & Jefferson Tuesday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field. W&J (18-7, 10-4 PAC) pulled out a 5-4 win in the opener and then took the second game, 5-0.

In the opener, Grove City trailed 4-0 before rallying to tie the game. The Wolverines broke through in the fourth inning when sophomore DH Travis Royer (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) doubled in freshman shortstop Drew Landis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).

In the fifth inning, senior second baseman Josh Hodges (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) singled in freshman center fielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) with Grove City's second run. Hodges then scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Grove City tied the game in the sixth when sophomore third baseman Brandon Gresh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) doubled in sophomore left fielder Luke Vorce (Irwin, Pa./Norwin).

W&J reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh, however. Landis doubled with one out in the bottom of the seventh but advanced no further. He finished 3 for 4 while Gresh doubled twice.

Freshman pitcher Matt Cottrill (Apple Creek, Ohio/Waynedale) made his first collegiate start and allowed four runs in four innings. Junior reliever Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) pitched the final three innings and allowed one run. Gallagher took the setback.

W&J broke open the second game by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. Waugaman went 2 for 3 with a double while Graham singled twice. Sophomore pitcher Cameron Lawson (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) started and allowed one run in four innings. Sophomore Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) pitched two scoreless innings of relief while Landis pitched the seventh.
