Grove City tops Geneva

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team earned a 9-5 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over visiting Geneva Tuesday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field. The Wolverines surged ahead by scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth, breaking a 5-5 tie.

Grove City (11-18, 7-12 PAC) pulled ahead in the eighth when sophomore first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored after a fielder's choice by sophomore third baseman Brandon Gresh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks). Gresh scored Grove City's seventh run of the game when freshman center fielder Tyler Graham (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) walked with the bases loaded.

Sophomore shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) then broke open the game with a two-run single that brought in sophomore right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and senior second baseman Josh Hodges (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City).

Graham laced a two-run double in the second inning to highlight the Wolverines' four-run second inning. Laylock also had a run-scoring single in the inning. Grove City pushed its lead to 5-2 in the fourth when Myers drove in sophomore catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch).

Myers finished the game 3 for 4 while Waugaman doubled and singled. Fritz and Laylock each had two hits. Fritz extended his hitting streak to 16 games and raised his season batting average to .478. Laylock and Graham each had three runs batted in.

Sophomore pitcher Andrew Taylor (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) earned the victory in relief for Grove City. He allowed one run in two innings. Sophomore Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) recorded his fourth save of the season after entering the ninth inning with two men on and no outs.

Sophomore Cameron Lawson (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) started for Grove City and yielded three earned runs in six innings. He fanned three.

Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson in conference play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
