Grove City falls to Bearcats

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded its three-game season series with Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Saint Vincent by dropping a 16-5 decision Wednesday afternoon at R. Jack Behringer Field. Saint Vincent broke a 5-5 tie by scoring twice in the top of the fifth and later broke open the game with five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

Grove City trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the third but quickly cut the lead to a run when sophomore first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) launched a two-run homer, his team-leading sixth clout of the season.

The Wolverines then tied the game in the fourth when sophomore right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a fielder's choice.

Waugaman opened Grove City's scoring by doubling in sophomore shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) in the first inning. Senior DH Reese Swatsworth (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) drove in Grove City's second run of the inning when his sacrifice fly brought in freshman left fielder Drew Landis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).

Laylock finished 3 for 5 while sophomore catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) doubled and singled. Swatsworth and senior second baseman Josh Hodges (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) both went 2 for 4.

Fritz extended his hitting streak to 20 games while Myers now has a 15-game hit streak. It's the first time since 2010 that Grove City has had two players post hitting streaks of 15 games or longer in the same season.

Sophomore pitcher Cameron Lawson (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) started for Grove City (12-21, 7-14 PAC) and pitched five innings. He allowed three earned runs and eight hits. Lawson fell to 3-3 on the season. Sophomore Andrew Taylor (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), senior Chris Curran (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush), junior Ryan Gallagher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and sophomore Jimmy Palmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) all pitched in relief.

Grove City will visit conference foe Bethany at 3 p.m. Friday for a single league game. The Wolverines host Bethany in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to close out the 2015 regular season.
