Fontbonne tops Grove City

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision Tuesday afternoon to Fontbonne (Mo.) at Chain O' Lakes Park.

Freshman third baseman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in for Grove City (9-4) while senior DH Travis Royer (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) added a double.

Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the second when Burke walked, advanced to third on Royer's double and then came home on a groundout by sophomore Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area).

After Fontbonne tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, Grove City pulled back ahead in the fifth when Burke singled in junior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Fontbonne (5-10) took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more runs in the sixth.

Sophomore pitcher Drew Landis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) started for Grove City and allowed four earned runs in five innings. He struck out six but took the setback. Senior Kenny Saltsman (Salem, Ohio/Salem) pitched the final three innings in relief. Saltsman surrendered one earned run.

Grove City will visit NAIA member Warner University at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
