Thomas More tops Grove City

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 12-6 decision at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More Sunday afternoon in the final game of the teams' three-game weekend series.

Grove City (22-10, 14-5 PAC) broke through with a two-run fifth inning. Junior third baseman Brandon Gresh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) opened the scoring by driving in freshman right fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore center fielder Tyler Graham (Vadergrift, Pa./Kiski Area) then singled in freshman left fielder Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina).

In the sixth, Auth singled in junior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Gresh drove in Hammel with a single.

Junior designated hitter Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) closed the scoring by cracking a two-run single in the ninth that drove in sophomore second baseman Cameron Smail (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) and freshman catcher Derek Boyle (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point).

Auth doubled and singled while Hammel and Smail both had two hits. Freshman reliever Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) threw 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Grove City. Bell struck out four and did not walk a batter. Junior C.J. Hils (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic) made the emergency start for Grove City and took the setback.

Grove City will host conference rival Geneva at 4 p.m. Monday in a single game at R. Jack Behringer Field.
